Bellissimo Medical relies exclusively on national reputable medical-grade supplement companies that continually test raw materials and finish products in state of the art laboratories that use cutting edge scientific methods to guarantee substance identity, potency, and safety. Additionally, Dr. Nerette tests their finish products himself prior to use with patients to ensure that only companies that go the extra mile are selected.
Raw materials can come in many forms and from numerous sources. Some are not as effective as others, perhaps because they are less bioavailable or less stable. Some are selected by manufacturers, not because they are better, but because they are cheaper or easier to use in the manufacturing process. While dietary supplement manufacturers are required to perform identification tests on raw materials, they are not required for example to test their material for things such as residual solvents that may be used during the production process. These solvents have the potential to be harmful, especially if consumed over a prolonged period of time.
In recent years, the New York State Attorney General’s office accused four major retailers of selling fraudulent and potentially dangerous herbal supplements to consumers and has demanded that they remove the products from their shelves. The authorities said they conducted test on the top-selling store brands of herbal supplements at four national retailers and found that, on average, four out of five products did not contain any of the herbs on their labels. These tests showed that pills labeled medicinal herbs often contained little more than cheap fillers like powdered rice, asparagus, and houseplants, and in some cases, substances that could be dangerous to those with allergies.
